• Dehydration – 5 Signs and Symptoms

  • skin experiencing signs of dehydrationDehydration causes many symptoms.  Do you know what the major difference is between a plum and a prune? Water. If I had to guess, you most likely would prefer to be a plum.

    Dehydration causes wrinkles

Most people would prefer their skin to be firm and smooth like a plum rather than wrinkly and dehydrated like a prune. Appearance is very important, however, dehydration can cause quite more damaging things to your body than just looking wrinkly.

    Dehydration causes muscle cramps

Our muscles are bathed in blood that contains oxygen, needed for the function of all the organs.  When dehydrated less oxygen is supplied to the muscles. Dehydration also causes an imbalance in the electrolytes such as sodium and potassium across the muscle cell membrane and a muscle cramp occurs.

Dehydration causes low back pain and stiffness

When we are dehydrated, cramps may occur in the back muscles.  Chronic mild dehydration and reduced mobility, such as sitting all day at our desks, causes water to leave the discs and the joints thus leaving us with mild chronic back pain and stiffness.

    Dehydration causes spinal disk degeneration

After adolescence, there are no blood vessels delivering blood directly to the discs.  The only mechanism of hydrating your discs is through movement.  If you are well hydrated and each and every level of the spine is moving discs will absorb water and stay tall.

    Dehydration causes headaches

Mild dehydration can cause headaches that may develop into a migraine headache.

Now that you know,  here is what you can do.

Hydration is the key factor in reducing wrinkles, increasing muscle flexibility, and relieving kidney-related low-back pain and stiffness.  How much water should you drink?  Adults should be consuming half their body weight in ounces of water every day. That means that if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking 75 ounces of water throughout the course of each day.

Few things that make it easier to stay hydrated

    • Buy a container/bottle that you like to see and touch and keep it close by
    • Drink room temperature water; it absorbs easier
    • Spice it up – place different types of fruits or cucumber, lime, lemon
    • Drink decaffeinated teas
    • Eat fruit and vegetables with high water content: watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, lettuce

It is my opinion that most people are completely unaware that they are dehydrated.  Increased consciousness along with following the above suggestions will help you stay better hydrated throughout the day.  Remember for spinal health it is not just enough to be hydrated, movement is the only facilitator for fluids to get in and out of the spinal discs.  So, get up, move, and get some water…
