• Cupping San Francisco – Ancient Chinese healing method

  • Cupping is a thousands of years old Chinese healing method that uses glass cups that are lit very briefly to reduce the air pressure and quickly placed on the skin to create suction. Chiro-Health Inc.’s staff offers cupping in San Francisco by leaving the cups to sit on the skin for 5-10 minutes to draw out impurities from the skin and nearby tissue.

Chiro-Health Inc.’s cupping in San Francisco increases circulation and brings oxygen and anti-inflammatory pathogens to the treated area.

    How Cupping Works

The suction cups create a small bruise that stimulates the innate healing mechanisms of the body.  When you cut or injure yourself a bruise develops naturally.  The purpose of this bruise is to alarm the nervous system and the immune system to start the healing process by increasing circulation and bringing oxygen and anti-inflammatory pathogens to the bruised area.

    Types of Cupping

    Static Cupping

The cups are placed on the skin and left for 5-10 minutes.  We use static cupping over tendons (the attachments of muscle to bone).  Unlike muscles, tendons are ropy, tight, inflexible, and poorly oxygenated.  Static cupping is also used over painful trigger points (painful knots).   The result is increased circulation, decreased tension, and decreased pain over the trigger point!

    Dynamic Cupping

During this type of cupping the cups are moved over the length of a muscle or along the lines of the facia to create a deeper myofascial release. The movement of the cups and the suction causes the muscle and facia to lift and separate, and breaks adhesions between them.  With this technique, we can reach deeper muscle layers than we can get to with our hands.  The result is decreased spasms, increased movement, and increased flexibility.

    Does cupping hurt?

If done correctly, cupping should not hurt.  You should however feel a moderate to strong pull on the skin.  We use castor oil for dynamic cupping to prevent the scraping of the skin.

Where in the body can you use cupping?

Cupping can be used on the back, shoulders, arms, and legs.  These are the conditions we use cupping for:  back and neck tension and spasm, shin splints, ITB (iliotibial band syndrome), short hamstrings, glutes, and quadriceps.

    When is cupping contraindicated?

    Over an open wound

Certain skin conditions – such as dermatitis

    Over an area of swelling

    When muscle tear is suspected

    Cancer – leukemia, hemophilia

Over the kidneys – when there is kidney disease
