• Allergies and Back Pain

  • Allergies and back pain connection

There is no scientific evidence that links seasonal allergies to back pain, meaning that if you have allergies you will not necessarily have back pain and vice versa. But it doesn’t mean that back pain can’t result from all that sneezing, coughing, sinus pressure, or even blowing your nose as a result of seasonal allergies. Allergies also increase the inflammatory chemicals in the body that can, in turn, excite pain neurons especially in an area that has been compromised, such as your back.

What does it mean if I have back pain when I sneeze or cough?

I ask my patients all the time whether they experience back pain with sneezing, coughing, laughing, sitting on the toilet, or during intercourse. All these can cause back pain, muscle spasms, or even spinal disc herniations by increasing the pressure in the spinal canal. If you have pain with any of these you should not attempt to treat it yourself. You should see your chiropractor. Chiropractors will evaluate you and diagnose the complexity of your back pain. Is it just a muscle spasm, is it a spinal disc herniation, is it a subluxation/misalignment? You would not treat a muscle spasm the same as you would treat spinal disc herniation, so it is important to have it properly diagnosed.

    How to feel better?

If you are experiencing back pain simultaneously with your seasonal allergies it is best to address them both at the same time. We all know that treating allergies is not a walk in the park. You may have been told by your doctor to take over-the-counter antihistamines and use nasal steroid sprays. I also suggest that you try acupuncture if you have not done so yet. In the hands of a capable acupuncturist, many people find natural relief and are able to have a better quality of life during the allergy season. Treating your back is just as equally important. See your trusted chiropractor.
