  • Scoliosis curvature? Here’s how chiropractic can help.

  • Chiropractic treatment is beneficial for scoliosis patients. Before you get adjusted, it is essential to discuss the kind of chiropractic treatment as well as reasonable expectations. Chiropractic adjustments, along with therapies such as massage, acupuncture, and traction, slow the progression of scoliosis curvature and dramatically improve quality of life. The degree of correction or decrease in the scoliosis curvature depends on these 3 factors.

    Type of scoliosis

    1. Skeletal maturity

The “Risser sign” measures skeletal maturity. Using an x-ray, the chiropractor can identify the degree of the ossification of the iliac apophyses (the wing of the pelvis, where you put your hands on your hips). Risser sign is measured on the scale from 0-5, with 5 being skeletally mature. From 0-3 the scoliosis is considered unstable and will progress. Young patients such as boys and girls from ages 11-13 can experience signs of scoliosis. During this time, it is safe and recommended to see a chiropractor, get adjusted, and learn how to slow the progression.

    2. The degree of the scoliosis

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature above 10 degrees measured on an x-ray. The medical treatment for scoliosis between 10-20 degrees is “watch and wait.” The chiropractic professionals at Chiro-Health Inc. are unsure what traditional doctors are waiting for. Chiro-Health Inc. is certain, however, that scoliosis will progress if you simply watch and wait. This is where chiropractic comes in! Chiropractic adjustments are the only treatment that can help halt the progression, alleviate pain, muscle spasm, decrease pressure on nerves to vital muscles and organs, improve posture, and prevent disk degeneration of the spine. (We do not recommend braces for patients with scoliosis curvature between 10-20 degrees.)

Patients with scoliosis curvatures ranging from 20-40 degrees can benefit from chiropractic care, as well as acupuncture and massage. It is mostly palliative treatment which reduces pain, inflammation, muscle spasm, and nerve impingement. Bracing is recommended for scoliosis curvature from 20-25 degrees. Surgery is recommended for 40-45 degrees of spinal curvature. It is best that your chiropractor co-manages the case with an orthopedist because you will need to be fitted with the best brace for your condition. Additionally, the orthopedist will be adjusting the brace between chiropractic treatments as the curve improves.

    3. The chiropractors’ expertise and adjusting techniques.

When seeking a chiropractor to manage scoliosis curvature, be sure to choose a chiropractor who is versed in several chiropractic techniques.  Some patients may not respond well to manual adjusting. As a result, an adjusting instrument or a drop table adjusting will be most beneficial.  Your treatment should also incorporate muscle work, intersegmental traction, and asymmetrical physical therapy exercises. You may also search for a chiropractor who practices Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) Technique.

In the hands of a good chiropractor, chiropractic treatments are very comfortable, safe, and effective.  The medical treatment “watch and wait” is inadequate for patients with scoliosis curvatures from 10-20 degrees.  Doing something is better than doing nothing, especially when there is a safe alternative!
