The easiest way to determine your foot arch type is by doing a wet foot print. Be sure to wet your entire foot and step on one foot with your full weight. There are three foot arch types: the normal arch foot, the flat arch foot and the high arch foot.
The normal arch foot.
The Normal arch foot has a normal-sized arch and will leave a wet footprint that has a flare, but shows the forefoot and heel connected by a broad band. A normal foot lands on the outside of the heel and rolls inwards slightly to absorb shock. It’s the foot of a walker/runner who is biomechanically efficient. Best shoes: Stability shoes with mild control features.
The flat arch foot
The Flat arch foot has a low arch and leaves a print which looks like the whole sole of the foot. It usually indicates an overpronated foot one that strikes on the outside of the heel and rolls inwards (pronate) excessively. Over time, this can cause many different types of overuse injuries. Best shoes: Motion control shoes, or high stability shoes with firm midsoles and control features that reduce the degree of pronation. Stay away from highly cushioned, highly curved shoes, which lack stability features.
The high arch foot
The High arch foot leaves a print showing a very narrow band or no band at all between the forefoot and the heel. A curved, highly arched foot is generally supinated or underpronated. Best shoes: Cushioned (or ‘neutral’) with plenty of flexibility to encourage foot motion. Stay away from motion control or stability shoes, which reduce foot mobility
Gait analysis, is helpful for runners, those who want to become runners or those who walk for exercise. The chiropractors at Chiro-Health, Inc are trained to perform video gait analysis. We have the person walk and run on a treadmill while videotaping their ankles. Then we talk with them about what healthy gait looks like (straight ankles, good heel strike, no toe-out, etc) and we show them their video. We often stop the video at intervals to help them see any inconsistencies in their gait. Then we discuss footwear choices that will be best for them. If it’s too late and they are already having pain with running, we can help them with chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy to get them back in shape and into the right shoes.
Proper footwear and /or orthotic support are one of the easiest ways to prevent injuries and relief pain. Our feet are as different as our faces and it’s essential to have the right footwear to minimize and prevent injury.
