    Sciatic nerve

Are you suffering from sciatic nerve issues? If you are, then it is time to discuss your treatment options with a chiropractor. Sciatica is not something to play with. It is very painful and begins in the lower back or the buttocks. It shoots down one leg or both. Some people will experience minimal pain while others will have moderate or excruciating pain. Some will have it more frequently than others. When the pain is constant, this is when it can be difficult to handle.

    The Disorder

Oftentimes, sciatica is mistaken for a disorder. Actually, it is a symptom of several disorders, which includes:

    • Misaligned vertebrae, which is known as lumbar subluxation
    • Herniated disc
    • Bulging disc
    • Tumor
    • Diabetes
    • Childbirth

You can also get this condition by sitting too long or sitting on an object in your pocket for a long period of time. This condition begins by feeling a pinch against the sciatic nerve. Not only does it bring pain, but also inflammation. With continued compression on the sciatic nerve, it can cause insomnia, sensory loss and sometimes even paralysis.

    Correct Diagnosis

Sciatica can be cause by these and several additional conditions and disorders. In all cases, it is best to receive the correct diagnosis from a chiropractor. Chiropractic care will be able to determine the deep root cause for what is causing your sciatic nerve to flare up. Before you receive the correct diagnosis, the chiropractor has to look at your medical history, in addition to conducting a neurological evaluation and a physical examination. This may include CT scans, X-rays or MRIs. This will help to identify the issue and rule out other conditions that may not need any form of spinal adjustment.

    Chiropractic Approach

The chiropractic approach will embrace the concept that the body can heal itself. In fact, this is what chiropractic medicine is indicative of. Patients will receive non-invasive and non-prescribed treatment, in most cases. If drastic measures and further treatment are necessary, the chiropractor will likely refer the patient to a healthcare specialist or medical doctor.

Depending on the severity of the condition, the chiropractor will consider different treatment plans, which may include:

    • Ice therapy using cold temperatures to reduce the inflammation and control the pain
    • Spinal manipulation, which is the main form of chiropractic care
    • Ultrasound to increase blood circulation and reduce stiffness, muscles spasms, cramping, pain and swelling
    • Spinal adjustment, which is adjusting the spine to its proper position
    • TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), which is s small machine used to stimulate the muscles

When diagnosis and chiropractic treatment is properly administered, the patient will definitely be able to see the results in no time. Most of these chiropractor treatments are painless and safe.  Therefore, if you are suffering from sciatic nerve pain, it is time to see a chiropractor.
